Leprechauns is a well-known type of fairy that derives from Ireland. They are commonly described to be an older man as tall as a small child. They are often seen wearing red or green attire and green hat and spend most of their time making shoes and hiding their coins at the end of a rainbow. They enjoy playing pranks on people. Legend say that if they ever ever caught by a human, the Leprechauns will grant three wishes to bargain for a release. The most well-known sighting of the Leprechaun occurred in Mobile, Alabama in 2006 when neighbors claim they have seen a small man with a green hat. Due to the hilarity of the interviewees of Mobile, Alabama, the video of the news coverage became viral and today has over 23 million views. It is also subject of an internet meme.
The Lake Van monster is a legendary cryptid that inhabits in Lake Van in Eastern Turkey. As of 2015, there are more than 1,000 eyewitnesses who have come forward to report their sightings of this creature. It is described to have multiple humps or spikes on its back, similar to what a Plesiosaur or Ichthyosaurus looks like. In 1889, Saadet newspaper reported a creature dragging a man into a lake. The latest alleged sighting occurred in 1997 when a teaching assistant at Van University recorded a footage of the creature. Skeptics and critics criticize the video because it never panned to the left. Some even suggested that perhaps it was intentional to hide whatever it is that would reveal what the unidentified creature really is, claiming that it may even be an air hose.
The Kalanoro is a hominid cryptid that lives in the Congo and Madagascar. Locals commonly describe the cryptid to be a humanoid with quills, pointy and hooked fingers, long hair, and three backward toes. They hide themselves deep in the Madagascar’s rainforests. Eyewitnesses can be traced back to 1886. Travel Africa Magazine describes a man who saw the Kalanoro in a rice paddy behind his village. He describes the creature to be a little man and very hairy with long fingernails. Legends say that the Kalanoro can be lured by the smell of fried pistachio nuts but due to their backwards feet, they often escape traps by running away.
The Jersey Devil is a legendary cryptid that lives in the Pine Barrens of Southern New Jersey. It is said to be a flying creature with hooves. Common sightings describe the Jersey Devil to have a kangaroo body with goat-like head and large bat wings. It also has large horns and often screeches and hysterically screams.
The origin of the Jersey Devil came from a folklore story told as early as the 1700s. “It was said that Mother Leeds had 12 children and, after finding she was pregnant for the 13th time, stated that this one would be the Devil. In 1735, Mother Leeds was in labor on a stormy night. Gathered around her were her friends. Mother Leeds was supposedly a witch and the child’s father was the Devil himself. The child was born normal, but then changed form. It changed from a normal baby to a creature with hooves, a goat’s head, bat wings and a forked tail. It growled and screamed, then killed the midwife before flying up the chimney. It circled the villages and headed toward the pines. In 1740 a clergy exorcised the demon for 100 years and it wasn’t seen again until 1890.”
The Honey Island Swamp Monster is said to be a bipedal creature with pale hair, red eyes, and odorous scent. It stands 7 feet tall and four webbed toes.
The first sighting was reported in 1964 by a retired air traffic controller, Harlan Ford, who began taking wildlife photography. Allegedly, a reel of film showing the creature was found in his belongings after his death.
Hogzilla was a male wild hog shot and killed by his owner, Chris Griffin, in Alapaha, Georgie. Originally, Griffin claimed to have hunted a giant hog but later revealed Hogzilla was in fact a pet. This revelation caused a public outcry.
Photograph of Hogzilla circulated throughout the United States due to people’s fascination with its length and size. Hogzilla was allegedly 12 feet long and weighed approximately over one ton. Its remains were exhumed in 2005 and studied by Dr. Oz Katz and his father Dr Eliahu Katz. The animal became the subject of a documentary and book. Due to its unbelievable size, Hogzilla was originally considered to be a hoax.
The hellhound is a legendary cryptid describe to be a supernatural dog. Legend has it that the hellhound has mangled, dark hair, red glowing eyes, with lightning speed and super strength. Other accounts say that the hellhound has a foul odor with ghostly features such as transparency. If one were to stare at the hellhound multiple times or hear their howls, they will die. The hellhound is said to be a guard dog for the gates of hell. One of the most famous and notable reports was an incident that occurred on August 4, 1577 in Blythburgh. At the time, the hellhound was name Black Shuck which said to have bursted through the doors of a church and killed a man and a child. It caused so much destruction that the church building collapsed. Those who touched Black Shuck after the building collapsed also fell down and died.
The Guam zombies, dubbed by television show Destination Truth, are famously known as Taotao Mo’na in Mariana Islands including Luta, Saipan, Tinian and Guam in Micronesia. They are believed to live any secluded areas on the island, particularly in the south. One must request permission in order to enter the jungle or take any resources from the jungle. The Taotao Mo’Na has intense dislike for pregnant women. Pregnant women of Chamorro often use perfume to mask their scent or their husband’s scent. They also stay indoors to be safe.
Some mistakenly believe that the Taotao Mo’na appears zombie-like, but most true legends describe them to be ghostly.
The Greenbrier Ghost is a ghost of a young woman seen in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. Elva Zona Heaster’s death was initially believed to be of natural causes, but courts later retracted and declared that she was murdered by her husband based on a testimony by her mother who claims she saw her daughter’s spirit. Her body was discovered by a young boy who came into the house for run an errand. He found Zona lying motionless on the stairs, with her body strangely placed as if someone moved her around after her death. When doctors arrived, her husband had carried Zona upstairs to the bedroom and dressed her himself. The doctor discovered injuries consistent with abuse on her body.
Legend say that Zona appears to her mother to discuss the abuse she endured while married to shue. Her neck was purportedly broken by her husband, and to prove this, she turns her head 180 degree and faces her mother backwards.
The Grassman is also known as the Ohio Grassman. It is describe to be similar an ape and it inhabits the grasslands of Ohio, particularly territories around Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Grassman. The Grassman is said to be extremely tall and huge, standing 7 feet tall and weighing 300 pounds. Tracks discovered claims to be left by Grassman shows that it purportedly has three toes.
